Hyrox Vs Crossfit: What's The Difference?
Is Hyrox CrossFit | What Is Hyrox | What Is CrossFit | Differences | Similarities | Which To Try
Although it's been around since 2017, the last year has seen interest in Hyrox rise rapidly. As this fitness event becomes more mainstream, there has been some confusion around what Hyrox actually is, and how it differs from CrossFit.
As official Hyrox partners, we wanted to highlight the differences between Hyrox and CrossFit. Here, PureGym PT and Hyrox Coach Andrea Marshall breaks down everything you need to know about Hyrox Vs CrossFit.
But first, is Hyrox CrossFit?
No – Hyrox isn’t the same as CrossFit, and while there are some similarities between the two, there are multiple differences in the workouts, exercises, and concepts.
What is Hyrox?
Hyrox is a fitness competition that combines running with eight different fitness exercises. Hyrox was created to test and challenge overall fitness, including strength, speed, power, and endurance, while still being suitable for all fitness levels.
During a Hyrox event, participants alternate between running 1km and doing a functional workout, for eight rounds. The exercises included in Hyrox are:
SkiErg
Sled push
Sled pull
Burpee broad jumps
Rowing
Farmers carry
Sandbag lunges
Wall balls
In addition to the Hyrox events, Hyrox have partnered with gyms like PureGym to create Hyrox fitness classes. These classes are suitable for all levels and can help to improve strength, speed, and endurance.
We've covered what Hyrox is in more depth here.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit workouts are high intensity strength and conditioning workouts made up of functional movements. It includes multiple types of exercises, including Olympic lifts and advanced gymnastic movements, as well as movements performed in everyday life including squatting, pushing, and pulling.
CrossFit hosts multiple types of competitions as well as free WODs (workout of the day), and there are multiple CrossFit affiliated gyms across the UK and globally.

CrossFit Vs Hyrox: The Differences
There are many differences between Hyrox and CrossFit:
Consistency of workouts. All Hyrox events follow the exact same format with the exact same exercises, while the exercises and formats of CrossFit workouts and competitions vary between each one.
Level of complexity. Hyrox exercises, while challenging, are straightforward and suitable for all levels. CrossFit often involves complex Olympic and gymnastic movements that require significant strength and technical skill.
Types of workout. CrossFit workouts are typically shorter, higher intensity workouts while Hyrox are more endurance focused.
Similarities Between Hyrox And CrossFit
While the two training styles are different, it’s understandable how people might think they’re the same if they don’t know much about CrossFit or Hyrox. Both offer global competitions that encourage people to test their strength and fitness, and the friendly but competitive atmosphere is something that draws people both to Hyrox and CrossFit. While the nature of the two competitions vary, people will enjoy competing at both and meeting likeminded people.
How To Know If CrossFit Or Hyrox Is Right For You
If you enjoy running, have more endurance related goals, or are new to working out, Hyrox is likely a better fit and we’d recommend starting here.
If you have more technical gym experience, enjoy or prefer high intensity workout formats, CrossFit may be more suitable.
You don’t have to choose between the two however. Both CrossFit and Hyrox can be fun, competitive workouts to try and many people enjoy participating in both.
